Designing for a
15-minute window.
I partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard to research ways to reduce human trafficking and drug smuggling into America, then led the design process for a mid-fidelity common operating picture.
A complex problem.
A short window.
San Diego’s proximity to Mexico created a unique problem where by water, human trafficking and drug smuggling can be done in as short as 15 minutes. Our team consisted of diverse technical backgrounds to research this problem alongside military leaders and defense companies.
01 / THE CHALLENGE
Be able to respond
as soon as it happens.
The project focused on supporting the Coast Guard’s efforts of detecting danger. My design direction was prototyping a common operating picture that grabbed visualizations from multiple sources, as well as drone deployment to act as scouts.
02 / RESEARCH
Start with the people
closest to the problem.
We conducted 30+ interviews with subject matter experts to narrow down a solution. We followed LEAN methodology to guide the research week by week.
03 / DESIGN DIRECTION
Bring information into
a common operating picture.
I led the design process for a mid fidelity common operating picture. Core features included surveillance cameras at key points, risk assessment, drone control, and a digital fence.
I ran demos of this workflow during interviews to assess its feasibility.
